Over the 30 years it has been in existence LinkAble is still developing and changing to meet the needs of the community it serves.
The charity began as a opportunity for parents of children with learning disabilities to meet up and discuss the challenges they face. Over time the charity grew, the range of activities developed and staff were taken on to provide them. As part of this process Link Leisure came in to being and was the name of the charity until 2013. By this time the charity had taken on the building on Board School Road from MENCAP.
2013 was a critical time in the life of the charity. The name Link Leisure was posing challenges as securing funding for a leisure charity was posing challenges. The building on Board School Road was cramped and was no longer meeting the needs of the service users or staff.
With the support of Woking Borough Council the building and the site on Board School Road were completely redeveloped to create the facility which we are still using today. We now proudly offer tours of our premises which boasts a soft play area, a changing area, a sensory room, an accessible kitchen, a garden and accessible climbing frames.
To accompany the renovation of the building a rebranding excercise was undertaken, as a result of which LinkAble was born. The iconic green and blue of our logo accompanied by 'Linkers' is now used to promote charity in every situation.
LinkAble now delivers a diverse range of services for children and adults with learning disabilities 7 days a week and nearly 52 weeks a year. Looking back it is amazing to think that a charity which now provides support to over 300 families and offers such wide range of services started from a tiny seed.
